Project Share - Pop Up Card for Mothers' Day

I love this idea and have seen it everywhere - especially Pinterest!

If you have older children, or a younger child with patience, this is a great project to give them. Make cards for Grandma, Aunt Sue or your favorite neighbor lady up the street!

We're going to attempt this for my Mother In Law who generally prefers hand made gifts from the grandkids.

 

I will be using my Fiskars petal punch to make the flowers. This is a real time saver! And we homeschool moms can use all the time savers we can get! 

I bought mine at Michaels. You can also find them at Hobby Lobby, Wal Mart, JoAnns and of course online through Amazon. Don't forget to use the stores' coupons!!

If you use the punch, the thickness of the paper may be an issue. I think construction paper is too thick, after it is folded, to fit into the punch. Just keep that in mind! I'll post my finished project in a day or two! I just needed to get this out there in hopes of inspiring someone!

Well, after some fiddling with this pop up card project here are my thoughts

• Forget the Fiskars petal punch. Mine was all but useless as it could not punch through even basic cardstock. It only punched a single  thickness of printer paper. I was beyond disgusted with the performance of this punch.
• You need a template. If you do not use a template, the size and shape of the petals will vary. Sometime very drastically. Variations in flowers negatively impacts the overall project. You want the flowers to be as uniform as possible.  I made my petal template by simply cutting  out the first flower, snipping off one of the petals and using that petal as the template. All the flowers were more or less uniform.
• Use sharp scissors. LOL.
• The size of the paper isn't important EXCEPT you need to consider the overall size of the card. I used 8.5"X11" card stock as my card base and used 7 inch, origami paper. The resulting flower cluster was almost too wide for the card and the whole cluster was too bulky for the card to close all the way. But it was beautiful!
• Pay attention to your folds. I found that (because I was yappin' LOL!) I did not end up with a correctly folded card. Keep your folded/creased edge on your left  and you should be fine.

This is a great technique and the flowers were beautiful, fluffy and full. You could use them as table centerpieces at a wedding or party - just choose more elegant paper. My origami paper flowers looked like luau flowers because of the colours I used. So I see lots of possibilities!
